Colleen Marie Barwell, 68, of Greenville and Pittsburgh, died unexpectedly on March 9, 2021.

Born May 25, 1952 in Greenville to the late Gerald and Juanita (Bortz) Junk, she married the late Edward Barwell on July 25, 1970.

Colleen graduated from Greenville High School in 1970, having been named Homecoming Queen in 1969. She was a member of Student Council, Leaders Club, Library Club (serving as Vice President and President) and Spanish Club (serving as Vice President and Treasurer).

Colleen worked at Loblaw’s in high school and Lysek’s while her children were young. She was a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service for 21 years and truly loved her job and her customers. She organized the first Food Drive program for the Post Office in 1994 and ran it until she retired. She also served for years as the Union Steward. Colleen was a lifelong member of St Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, volunteered in the office and taught CCD to fifth graders for many years.

She was a member of the Greenville Coin Club and a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary. She volunteered at the Greenville Public Library and was a member of the quilting group at Holy Trinity Lutheran. Colleen loved riding on the back of the Harley with Ed and she was very involved in A.B.A.T.E. of Mercer County and A.B.A.T.E. of PA in their early years. She loved reading, listening to music and dancing around the house, attending concerts, sewing, swimming, and animal rescue. She especially loved Pittsburgh Pirates baseball and, more than anything, she loved being a mom. She was involved in PTA and other groups at West Side Elementary School, was Treasurer for Cub Scout Pack 92 and organized Girl Scout cookie sales for Troop 109.

Colleen is survived by her daughter, Michelle Marie Barwell of Pittsburgh, brothers Tom & Gloria Junk and Shawn & Michelle Junk, sisters Diane Junk, Sheila Junk, Patti Junk, Bridget & Jerry Noble and Maureen & John Gray, sister-in-law Patricia & Michael Smith. She also had 28 nieces and nephews whom she cherished. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edward, her son Ryan Edward Barwell, and her brother-in-law Dennis Barwell.

In lieu of flowers, Michelle is requesting that donations be sent to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Western PA Chapter, 1597 Washington Pike, Suite A38 Box 272, Bridgeville, PA 15017, St. Michael’s School Fund, 85 N. Michele – When a group of us reconnected many years after high school, Colleen was, of course, part of that. Whether we met for dinner or for a long weekend destination, the intervening years just seemed to melt away and we picked up where we left off. She was so proud of you and I don’t know of any mother/daughter who were as close. My sincerest condolences. I hope you find comfort in the knowledge that you are in the thoughts and prayers of so many.

Colleen and Ed have been our friends for nearly forty years! Our friendship has stayed strong all these years and we will surely miss Colleen! We would talk on the phone for an hour at a time. I loved her outlook on life. She was a great mom! The first time I met her she was playing with Michele and Ryan in backyard little kids pool laughing, soaking wet, kids screaming in fun having a blast! Her greatest joy was her children! Ed was her great love! Michele you are her best friend and daughter. It just doesn’t get better than that! She loved you so much and you got each other through a lot of horrible times! But you need to remember that our loved ones are always near and live eternally in our hearts. She will never leave your heart❤️

To Colleen’s family and dear friends,
Please accept my deepest sympathies. My life has been blessed for meeting and getting to know Collen through the pool classes I conducted at Momentum Therapeutics in Greenville. She was a hoot! Wow was she proud of you Michelle. We were blessed when she brought her sister Patti to join the pool class with us!
She enjoyed life to the fullest. We missed her when she made the decision to focus on her new house / current house renovations. She will be one those people that I’ll always remember because of the joy she brought to our lives.
Until week meet again, RIP Colleen.
