Joel Jamin Wentling, age 51, of Greenville passed away Saturday morning, October 12, 2019 at his home after an 8 month long fight with pancreatic cancer. Every single day he received input from friends and family, who wished him well and boosted his spirits. He truly got to see examples of the best in humanity and was so grateful for that.
Joel was born in Greenville on September 29, 1968 to Dallas and Joan Wentling. Following graduation from Greenville High School in 1987, he began his studies in secondary education, specifically social studies, at Grove City College graduating in 1991. He played defensive tackle for the Wolverines, was captain, and a 4 year starter. After college, he began a position he enjoyed immensely, for 2 years he worked as a teacher and counselor of troubled youth for Vision Quest, based in Franklin, PA. Vision Quest operated a unique “wagon train” program that gave troubled young adults the extraordinary experience of traveling 1000 miles across country on horseback or covered wagon. He helped the kids develop self-confidence, patience, and coping skills.
In 1993, he began teaching 8th grade social studies at Reynolds High School. At this time, he obtained his masters degree in education at Westminster College including certificates in guidance counseling and secondary administration. In 1997, he began his 22-year stint as principal and assistant principal working at Conneaut Valley High School and Conneaut Lake Middle School.
Joel was also a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Student Assistant Professionals and on the state board for 22 years. He also served on the Crawford County Children's Advocacy Council. He loved his students and thought it was important to understand kids, respect them, and have relationships with them. He always said “Principal ends in PAL”. Joel shared his passion for the outdoors with his family. Over the years, they spent many hours fishing, hunting whitetail, turkey, groundhogs, pheasants and grouse with his dog “Willy”.
He attended Zion's Reformed United Church of Christ where he was very involved as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. He also enjoyed serving meals at the Good Shepard Center.
On September 4, 1998, Joel married the former Michelle McClimans, she survives. He is also survived by his parents of Greenville; his son Jamin Wentling, daughter Mesa Wentling and son Justin Lewis and his wife Kylee, all of Greenville; brother Kyle Wentling and his fiance Amanda Boggs and her children Gavin and Peyton, brother Parke Wentling and his wife Jennifer; nephews Bryer and Trap Wentling; nieces Ada and Iris Wentling; grandchildren Lincoln and Lexi Lewis all of Greenville. He was preceded in death by his uncle Rodney Wentling.
Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepard Center, 10 N. Water St., Greenville, PA 16125.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville.

Words cannot express how I feel about the loss of Joel. Joel was a professional friend and colleague of mine in Conneaut School District. He was a stand up kind of guy….he was a wonderful principal, always putting “his kids” and staff first. He was a true friend to me (AKA “the boss”) and to say he will be missed by all that knew and loved him is an understatement.
Matthew 25:21
“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
Rest in peace Joel…
Wendy Rusmisel Szallay
Retired Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent of Conneaut School District and Joel’s friend
I am so sorry to hear of Joel’s passing. I got to know Joel when he played football at Grove City College. Joel had a passion for the game, a passion for friendships and just an overall passion for life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a competitive spirit. After his playing days were over I would see him at the Grove City College Football Alumni Golf Outing. He would also greet me with a big Joel bear hug and would never leave the event without taking a moment to say goodbye. To quote Jackie Robinson: “ A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives”. #86, your life was very important! Joel, you will be missed by many!

Our deepest condolences on the loss of your husband. I will keep you and your family in my prayers
God’s speed and condolences to the entire family on your recent loss and for that of Rodney long ago who was a good friend!
To Dallas, Kyle, Michelle, and the rest of the Wentling family, The Wentling name is above reproach. Although Joel will not be here on earth physically, he along with Rod will always be with those who knew them in our hearts forever.
Michelle, Jamin, Mesa, and to Joel’s Mom, Dad, and brothers- I am so sad for your loss. I am happy to call Joel my friend for over 30 years. A teammate, a roommate, a golf partner, a jokester, a teacher, and always good for a story full of laughs. I loved how Michelle described it recently-he could tell the story we heard a million times like it was the first time he ever told it and we would laugh like we never heard it before. I will never forget those days on the football field at Grove City College, or the days on the fairways at Greenville and Butler CC, and I will never forget time well spent laughing with my friend…I will miss you Joel! Love, Bill Fraser

To the Family of Joel Wentling,
When someone so special is lost too soon there are no words. Joel made an impact on so many throughout his life and career. If you did not know him personally you knew about him professionally. Very special person. True servant of the community in so many ways. Working with youth requires a “gift”. He will be missed.
God Bless the entire Family at this time.
Take care,
Mike & Anne Wansor
I am so sorry to hear of Joel’s passing. I didn’t know he was ill nor that he lost his battle with cancer until my Aunt Elaine Shearer called to tell my mom. My heart is with you all. I am sorry that we will not be able to be there in person with you during this sad and stressful time. Please know that he is with family and they will keep him and love him. I am sure that my Grandma Koren is already making him laugh.
Be strong and know that our hearts are with you.
All our love,
Jen (Koren), RJ, Brady and Abigail Feicht
I am really sorry for the loss of your family member dear to you, Joel Wentling. But it is heartwarming to learn that God feels for you and he longs for the time when he will bring back to life your loved ones sleeping in death according to Job 14:14,15. Until that time, may God of all comfort be able to comfort your entire family during this difficult time.
Mr. Wentling was a kind, gentle soul who will be missed by faculty and student body alike. I had the pleasure of working in the district with him and both of my children went to CLMS. Joel showed compassion and trust with my children. He made the extra effort to talk to me every volleyball and basketball game I attended. He genuinely cared for the children and the love he had for his job was easily seen. I will miss his kindness and those stylish bow ties. His family should be proud of the legacy he left with the children he worked with. My son and daughter are now in high school and will always remember him.
Michelle and family, I am sorry to hear of Joel’s passing.I have a lot of great memories of Joel at Reynolds High School. You have my deepest sympathy.
Michelle and family including Dallas Joan Kyle Parke. My heart breaks for all of you for the passing of Joel Unfortunately there are no words for your loss. All of us have been effected by these heartbreaks of cancer. May I just encourage all of you to smile when you remember the love he had for all of you. Time has passed over 30 plus years since Joel and I really every did anything or really spoke but I will always remember the fun growing up. May all of you be assured that Joel has passed on to our eternal home and the day will come when being reunited will be.
Prayers and blessings to each of you
Rodney and Tammi Callahan.
I remember my first meeting Joel when we were kids, at Zion’s Sunday school. He was the first “other” Joel I had ever met, and it was comforting to know that there was another Joel in the world. He touched so many lives, and the world suffers his loss. My heartfelt condolences to Michelle and the Wentling family.
Michelle – Even though I never met Joel it seems like I did as I heard so many great attributes about him.
My condolences, thoughts and prayers are with you & family.
Dear Michelle and Family,
My sincere condolences to you and yours in remembrance of Joel’s significant time on this earth. He was a top notch educator, loyal husband and father, valued colleague and a true friend to so many. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.
Most Sincerely, and Peace to All
Prayers to the family for your loss!! I had the pleasure to work with Joel at the PASAP/PAMLE conference for the past 5 years. Joel was an amazing person to work with and worked very hard for the organization. He was all about what was best for the attendees and kids. He will be sorely missed by many!!
To the Wentling family,
We have a family wedding this weekend in MA. I will not be able to attend the viewing or services for Joel and extend my condolences in person. I worked with Joel on the PASAP Board and it was a pleasure to get to know him professionally and personally. He was so kind and welcoming as a new Board member. What I will remember most is his strong and hearty laugh, which was often as he seemed to find the positive in all situations.
God is never closer than when your heart is breaking. May you find peace and comfort of God’s grace and mercy as you work through the grieving process.
So sorry for you loss.
Jen PASAP member
