Margaret J. “Peggy” Volpe, age 76, of Gruber Rd., Hempfield Twp., passed away unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack on Thursday evening, June 30, 2016 in UPMC Passavant.Â
Peggy was born in Greenville on July 5, 1939 to Glenn S. and Edith G. (Wilson) Hawthorne. She was a 1957 graduate of Penn High School and had retired from the former Northern Mercer County United Way, where she had worked as an administrative assistant. She had previously been employed in the personal department of R.D. Werner Co., as well as working at the former Mossman’s Card Shop.Â
She was a lifetime member of Calvary United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and served on the worship committee. She also attended Christian Assembly Church, where she taught Sunday School. Peg had been active with the Greenville Schools P.T.A. and had served as a Brownie Troop Leader. During her younger years she enjoyed to bowl and had belonged to a Thursday Night Ladies League at Z and Z Lanes. Peg had been very active with the Penn High Class of 1957, as she coordinated the class dinners and served on the reunion committee. She had also been a member of the class’s long standing ladies card club.Â
Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, and Peg couldn’t wait to retire to become a full time Grammy. On October 4, 1958 she married Robert G. Volpe, he survives at home. Also surviving are two daughters, Shelly L. Patton and her husband Jeff of Hermitage and Brenda R. Wallace and her husband Jeff of Greenville, and three grandchildren, Hannah E. Wallace, Ryan J. Wallace, and Asher R. Patton, and three step-grandchildren, Kelley Patton, Kim Moon, and Ryan Patton.Â
She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Steven V. Wallace.
Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, 44 S.Mercer St., Greenville, PA 16125 or Christian Assembly Church, 111 Main St., Greenville, PA 16125.

Thoughts and prayers for your family at this difficult time
Uncle Bob, Shelly and Brenda,
At this season of deep sorrow and sadness I send my love and prayers that you find strength and comfort in the presence of Jesus. I pray He will bring peace of heart and moments of joy to give rest to the ache within the heart. Aunt Peggy was an amazing woman, wife and mother! I cherish warm memories of times we all shared together. I find comfort knowing that Jesus has welcomed her home and to the place He had ready for her and rejoice that we will see her again one day! One great and glorious family reunion day awaits us. Blessings and love.
Brenda, Jeff and Family,
You have our deepest condolence, thoughts and prayers. God bless you and may your best memories always be with you!
What a wonderful person she was. Our thoughts and prayers to her family.
Bob and family. Peggy was like a sister to Jim. Some of his fondest memories were of his childhood days spent playing with Peggy while Glenn, Edith, Ma and Pa played canasta; your days in high school; and then the reunions. She always made me feel like one of the alumni at the reunions even though I wasn’t a GHS graduate. It will be hard going to the reunions without seeing her smiling face. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Our hearts & prayer go out to Bob & your family! Peggy was such a wonderful person & just to be with her made you happy…what a wonderful personality & attitude! She was a great friend…I know how proud you all always were of her. You are in our thought & prayers.
