Paul Massie was one of my best friends on the faculty at GHS. He was always available if I needed help or advise. At a time when my family life was in crisis he offered any resource that he had to help me through it. It was greatly appreciated. And he will always be remembered as a wonderful human being.

My memories of Mr. Massie are all good. He added a special zing when teaching and yes, my Big Mouth earned me a fabled “5!” After graduation from GHS anytime he saw me, he made it a point to stop and say “hello.” His overall excitement is something I truly admired and I will never forget. My condolences to all his Family & Friends.

I am saddened to learn of Mr. Massie’s passing. I just shared with my husband how he would hand out “5’s” and scare the wits out of a sleeping classmate by dropping metal trashcans nearby. How blessed to have been on this earth for 96 years, married for 70 of them ❤️ and to serve, not only the youth of his community, but also his country. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and to all that knew and loved him.

As much as Mr. Massie taught his students, and as much as we admired and respected him, only now while reading his obit am I learning that he served during WWII, built his own home, and loved swimming. None of this should surprise anyone who ever met Mr. Massie; he relished the human experience and carried a worldly but genuine optimism into every class he taught at Greenville. He didn’t talk much about himself, but listening to him gave you the impression he had seen and done important and meaningful things. What’s more, you quickly learned that you weren’t simply listening to Mr. Massie: he was listening to you too. He made you feel like this conversation he’s having with you right now is no less important to him than anything he has ever done. He made you want to take risks and meet people and experience the world and fulfill the promise of America. How amazingly fortunate were we to have him all these years, not just as an educator, but as a model for citizenship! Rest in peace, sir. You were one in a million.

Mr.Massie was one of the best!! I always loved his class, and his passion for teaching- it was evident to all. I have often told my kids about his classes…the 5’s, the “eagles” that would start to fly when someone was giving a sub-standard current event, and his love for “Uncle Milty “(Milton Freeman). I was in his classroom when President Reagan was shot. He turned on the black and white TV and watched with all of us as events unfolded.
He was a great teacher, a great man, and a great example to hundreds and hundreds of GHS students.
My prayers are with the family as you grieve and celebrate the life of this man who was so well-loved.

My name is Annette Chapin. In the 80’s and 90’s, I was a substitute teacher at Greenville HS. I had a history/government certification and subbed numerous times for Mr. Massey. We somehow just clicked – I think part of it was that I was a graduate of Allegheny College as was his brother, Walter. He had attended many events there with his brother My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Massey and all the Massey family. He was one in a million – a rare combination of strong values, intelligence, dedication to teaching young people, creativity, a sense of fun and enormous energy. I am so glad he had a long life because there was so much to learn and enjoy from being with him – one of my very favorite human beings, ever!

Mr. Massie was one of my favorite teachers at GHS. Having moved for NC to Greenville for my last two years of High School (GHS Class 0f 72), he was so friendly and we talked a lot about where I was from and history which was my best subject. He had a laugh that would fill the room at times and seem to put everyone at ease. I believe that his teaching was a great mentoring to many GHS students. Pleas know that I will be in prayer for all of you.
