The Giangiordano family mourns the passing of its matriarch, Adelaide (Addie) Arlene Rechedy Giangiordano, who passed away on the evening of Saturday, April 13, 2024. She was 92 years of age.
The family also takes joy in knowing that she has been reunited with her loving husband of 66 years, Ralph Giangiordano, Sr., and her eldest son, Ralph Jr., who passed in 1999.
Addie, or “Toots” to those who knew her best, was born on December 31, 1931, in Belle Vernon, PA, and grew up in Burghill, OH, the youngest of 11 children. Her parents, Peter and Emma (Melani) Rechedy, immigrated from Italy as teenagers. Her father was a chicken farmer, and Addie’s first job as chicken-plucker was a favorite family joke.
During high school, Addie was an accomplished majorette and baton twirler, marching with the award-winning Western Reserve Military Band in parades and events across the mid-West. After graduation, she worked at Lordstown, assembling circuit boards for early versions of IBM computers.
Addie and Ralph met at the Shady Grove Dance Hall and were married one year later, on December 26, 1951, while Ralph was on leave from the US Navy. They lived in Maine and Tennessee before settling in Ralph’s hometown of Greenville.
In 1957, they built a home in West Salem Township, where they raised their six children. For more than 60 years, their home was filled with family, friends, and laughter. The door was open at all hours to all people, and it will be the source of cherished memories for years to come.
Addie’s legacy is the impact she has had in the lives of others. She was the epitome of a people-person and confidante, and she continually widened her circle by “adopting” others along the way. People, even strangers, were drawn to her listening ear and genuine concern. She carried this same spark and indomitable spirit to her home at the Waters of Wexford in Warrendale, PA, where she lived for the last five years of her life. Even there, her door was always open, and she became a beloved and mischievous presence.
Addie believed her mission in life was to be the best possible wife, mother, and grandmother. In this, she succeeded.
Addie and Ralph’s children and their spouses are Ralph Jr. and Carol Giangiordano, Dave and Mary Giangiordano, Steve and Renee Giangiordano, Mike and Susan Giangiordano, Kathy and Bob Serenko, and Linda Simone Giangiordano and Steve D’Angelo.
Their 14 grandchildren were constantly blessed and entertained by Addie’s unique brand of wisdom, humor, and unwavering strength. Her grandchildren are Diane Rafferty, Mark (Lea) Giangiordano, Mike (Andrea) Giangiordano, Karen (Alex) Mustico, Raymond (Beth) Giangiordano, Kelly (Trey) Lydle, Steve (Katie) Giangiordano, Nick (Adrienne) Giangiordano, Dan (Abby) Giangiordano, Brian (Alicia) Giangiordano, Michael Napodano, Kaitlyn (Bret) Marshall, and Stephanie (Sean) Clifford. Addie was preceded in death by her grandson, Caleb Napodano.
Addie took great pride in her 27 great grandchildren, Jacob, Tyler, Evan, and Abbie Antil, Sophia, Dominic, and Joey Giangiordano, Wyatt Stock, Vincenzo and Lucia Giangiordano, Matthew, Giovanni, and Austin Rafferty, Addie and Luca Giangiordano, Beckett and Elle Giangiordano, Olive, Eloise, and Frank Mustico, Olivia Giangiordano, Vera and Roman Giangiordano, Gavin Birkmire, Blake and Emma Marshall, and Shane Napodano.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael School Endowment Fund, 85 N. High Street, Greenville, PA 16125. Individuals attending the services are asked to refrain from wearing perfume or cologne due to the health concerns of immediate family members.
