Barbara Gilman Poolos, 90, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2024, in St. Paul’s Senior Living Community.
Born November 4, 1934, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Clifton and Viola (Jones) Gilman, Barbara graduated from Hampton Academy before earning a R.N. at the New England Baptist School of Nursing in Boston. She was employed as head nurse at the New England Baptist Hospital, where she met her future husband, Dr. Constantine James (Dean) Poolos. They wed on July 8, 1961, and moved to Greenville in 1963 to raise their family.
Barbara was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as a deacon and elder. She volunteered at the Greenville Hospital, Greenville Area Public Library, and at her children’s schools. An avid tennis player, she also enjoyed books, crafting, baking, yearly visits to the New England coast, and Red Sox baseball.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Dean; daughter Ann (Stephen) Bailey of Alexandria, Virginia; son James (Shannon) of Sonoma, California; and daughter Christine of New York City; sister Ann Freeze of New Hampshire; grandchildren Alexandra, Tyler, and Stephanie; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents and by a sister, Elizabeth Higgins.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, 11/19/24, in Westminster Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 323 Main St. Greenville, with Rev. David A. Dobi, Pastor of the Church, officiating. Family and friends will be received in the church parlor on Tuesday, 11/19/24, from 9:45–10:45 AM. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Greenville Area Public Library, 330 Main Street, Greenville, PA 16125.
