Bertha S. Heckman, age 103, of Greenville passed away Thursday morning, November 7, 2024, in The Ridgewood at St. Paul’s Senior Living Community.
She was born in South Attleboro, MA on December 19, 1920 to Robert L. and Ethel (Chisholm) Sumner. Bertha was a graduate of Attleboro High School and received her R. N. from the Pawtucket Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She served as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps in the European Theater during WWII and was involved in the 112th Evacuation (Rhineland-Central Europe Campaign). Bertha was employed as an R. N. at Greenville Hospital and had retired as Director of Nursing from St. Paul Homes.
She was a member of Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ, Greenville and had been a long-time volunteer at St. Paul’s.
On November 23, 1945, Bertha married Stanley O. Heckman; he passed away August 18, 1984.
She is survived by a son, Alan S. (Kathleen) Heckman of Clarks Mills; a daughter, Rebecca (Robert) Clark of Bay Head, NJ; four grandchildren: Catherine (Patrick) Grant, Robert G. (Sarah) Clark II, Kerry Heckman, and David (Lulit) Heckman; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Robert L. Sumner, Jr., and a sister, Barbara Lima.
Services:
A Private Funeral Service will be held in Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 366-368 S. Main St. Greenville, with Rev. Pat Spears, Spiritual Director of St. Paul’s Senior Living Community, officiating. Burial will be in Shenango Valley Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Senior Living Community, 339 E. Jamestown Rd. Greenville PA 16125.
