Billy “Bill” L. Sankey, age 82, of Greenville, passed away surrounded by his family Thursday morning, March 14, 2024 in UPMC Passavant-McCandless. He was born in Greenville on March 10, 1942 to William Paul “Pete” and Leona Mae (Adams) Sankey.
Bill was a 1960 graduate of Greenville High School and then served as both active duty and as a reservist for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. On June 15, 1962 he married the former Rosalie Lenora Schreiner. He retired in 2002 from the Bessemer & Lake Erie R.R., where he was employed in the Transportation Department for 37 years. Bill was then employed as a coach driver for Anderson Bus and Coach, served as a driver to the Amish community for 12 years as well as serving as a driver for the Greenville Chrysler dealership and Thiel College.
He attended First Church of God, Greenville, where he had served as the Mission Treasurer. Bill was a member and past Worshipful Master for F&AM Lodge #290. He and his wife were a host family for international students for 20 years and Bill had been very active in Celebrate Recovery at Hope Center Ministries. He had a heart for serving others and had a special love for the Hope Center young men. Bill voluntarily wrote and mailed encouraging cards to many people each month. His other interests included, riding his Harley motorcycle and spending time with his family. As an avid walker, he could be seen walking the neighborhood 3-5 miles a day.
In addition to his wife of 61 years, Bill is survived by his two daughters, RoseMarie (Barry) Lang and Sherri (Rob) Robinson, all of Greenville; a son, Bruce R. (Rachelle) Sankey of Jamestown; grandchildren, Tiffany, Brittany, Dan, Zach, Loghan, Camryn and Gavin, ten great-grandchildren, a brother, Rev. Leonard (Janet) Sankey of Union, KY; a sister Betty (Arden) McCartney of Pittsburgh, a sister-in-law Cyndi Sankey of Greenville and many and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother David “Doc” Sankey.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Center Ministries, 11076 County Line Rd., Greenville, PA 16125. Arrangements have been entrusted to Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville.
