Carol Susan Rowland, age 87, of Patton Rd., Hartstown, passed away Monday evening, December 4, 2023 in St. Paul’s Senior Living Community. She was born in Greenville on October 30, 1936 to David M. and Helen (Robinson) Rowland.
She was a 1954 graduate of Penn High School and earned an Associate Degree in the secretarial program at Thiel College in 1956. A believer in lifelong learning, she continued her education throughout her life at Ursinus College, West Chester University, Washington College, The National Trust for Historic Preservation and Thiel College. In her thirties she earned an associate degree in landscape design from Temple University. She subsequently worked restoring historic gardens. She was the administrator of the Historic John Bartram Association in Philadelphia where she developed nature study and gardening programs for inner-city children. She created the final design for the restoration of Historic Bartram’s Garden.
She was a member of the PA Historical Society, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the John Bartram Association and the Greenville Historical Society. She was a board member of the Conneaut Lake Library and a grateful member of Alanon. She enjoyed traveling, both in the U.S. and abroad, having visited Israel and a number of countries in Europe and the Far East. She was an avid reader and gardener who loved being outdoors. Until age slowed her down, she loved mowing her fields with her ancient tractor, hiking, bird watching and ice skating.
She is survived by her daughter, S. Lianne Schoenwiesner of Montclair, NJ; her son, Andrew T. Lynch and his wife Mayo Tsuzuki of Sunnyvale, CA; her sister, Eleanor (Zoni) Beisch of Carson City, NV; her brother, Andrew G. Rowland and his wife Sue of Ocean City, MD; four grandchildren, Oliver and Katharina Lynch and Lina and Ariane Schoenwiesner. She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husbands, Donald H. Palmer and Francis T. Lynch, her brother, Richard D. Rowland, sister-in-law Marilyn Rowland and her brother-in-law, Gene Beisch.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Inurnment will be in Shenango Valley Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville.
