Col. Charles H. “Bud” Manes, AF Ret., born August 30, 1931, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania,
to Gaynell Carrie Peddicord Manes (later Hull) and Charles Culbert Manes, died April 22, 2025,
leaving behind his wife Ann Stanonis-Manes of Greenville; his sister, Carol Excel of Wellsville, OH; sons Don (Lori) of New Port Richey, FL; David (Shelley) St Petersburg, FL; Tim of Orlando FL; and daughters Pam (John) Darley of Orlando FL; and Megan (Andy) Manes of Delaware, OH; also survived by his former wives Myrtie Manes, and by Marilyn Cotton, plus nieces and nephews, and one grandson.
Bud graduated from Thiel College in 1958, and lettered in both football and basketball for the Tomcats from 1955 to 1958. He earned his MS in Education at [now Case] Western Reserve University in 1964. Coach Manes was a professor of Health & Physical Education at Thiel 1959-1997, coached basketball 1960-1975, and was named Small College Basketball Coach of the Year for the Tomcats’ 1967-68 season; he coached Track & Field and Cross Country 1959-1989. Manes served as the college’s Director of Athletics from 1978 to 1981, and was instrumental in the formation of the Thiel Athletic Hall of Fame, himself inducted in 2008. In 2003 Thiel conferred him Professor Emeritus, and in 2019 named The Col. Charles “Bud” Manes ’58 Track in his honor.
Bud served in the military 1948 to 1983, including active duty as a Platoon Leader in the 65th Regimental Tank Co. during the Korean War. After completing Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned 2nd Lt. in Armor, then qualified as a Parachutist in the 11th airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY. In 1954 he joined the Army Reserves and then in 1963 the Air Force Reserves, stationed at Youngstown AFB and rising to full Col. before his retirement in 1983.
In retirement, Bud served as Department of Pennsylvania Chaplain ITAM, and National Chaplain, ITAM. In 2005 he visited the Korean War Vets Memorial in Washington DC on the 10th anniversary of that monument’s dedication and laid wreaths with his comrades at several war memorials in DC.
He will be remembered as a kind, witty man, eager to help anyone. Countless students, athletes, soldiers and friends are richer for having known him.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the many kind services and care provided by Gentiva Hospice, especially Jessica, Amanda, Heather, Brandy, Carlie and Addy, and chaplain Joe Frank, and his caregiver of the last three years, Kristen Jones.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, 5/1/25, in The David Johnson Memorial Chapel of Thiel College, 94 College Ave. Greenville. Military Honors will be rendered by Greenville VFW Post #3374 Honor Guard at the conclusion of the service. Family and friends will be received from 4:00 – 6:00 PM Wednesday, 4/30/25, in Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main St. Greenville. Burial will be in Shenango Valley Cemetery.
