Dorothy G. Spence, 73, of College Ave., Greenville, passed away Friday morning March 19, 2021 while in home hospice care. She was surrounded by her loving husband and family.
She was born in Pittsburgh, PA. on November 26, 1947 to William and Dorothy (Coombs) Grosjean. In 1966, she began work as a full-time switchboard operator for Bell of PA while pursuing an undergraduate degree in mathematics and an MBA, both from the University of Pittsburgh. She was promoted numerous times at Bell Atlantic / Verizon where she retired as manager of outside-plant engineering.
Dottie was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church of Bellevue, PA where she served as an elder of the session and as the church’s representative in the presbytery. For years, she delivered food to the needy and organized the church’s voting-day spaghetti dinner and its spring flea-market fundraiser.
Dottie moved to Greenville, PA to marry Daniel Spence on Oct. 12, 2013. It was a marriage made in heaven; every day together were the happiest days of Dan’s and Dottie’s lives.
In Greenville, Dottie served as Treasurer, Program Chair, and Dining Card Co-Chair of the Greenville Kiwanis Club. She organized special events for Kiwanis such as a combined Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions Club blood drive; provided food for the Good Shepherd Center summer meal program; filled backpacks with food for elementary school children; and participated in the March of Dimes March for Babies Walk.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel F. Spence, of Greenville; two sisters Virginia Leibach and husband William of Pittsburgh and Ruth Foster and Dan Macri of Zelienople; three nephews, William Swarmer and wife Colleen, Michael Leibach, and Burt Leibach; two nieces, Tracy Sarver and husband Paul Sarver, and Laura Morse; eleven stepchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her late husband John Geary and a sister Betty Grosjean.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Western Region, 320 Bilmar Dr., Pittsburgh, PA 15205. Arrangements have been entrusted to Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville.
