It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward L. Smith of Jamestown on January 17, 2025 at the age of 89. Edward was born on December 4, 1935, and he passed away peacefully in the same house on the family farm where he was born, surrounded by the memories of a lifetime.
Ed and Patricia (Challenger) were married on October 25, 1958, and together they shared a rich and fulfilling life. They were the proud owners and operators of Colonel Hunter Game Farm, where they created lasting memories and a legacy of hard work while raising their family. Both were deeply committed to their community involved as Explorer Scout Leaders, 4-H Leaders, and dedicated dairy farmers. Edward was a skilled welder and worked as a foreman at Steel Car for 20 years and president of Pennsylvania Game Breeders Association.
Ed deeply enjoyed living on his family farm, taking great satisfaction in witnessing the cycles of planting and harvests each year. Some of Ed’s favorite pastimes were riding around in his Ranger, tending to his garden each year, and watching his grandchildren grow up, proudly witnessing their successes and the bright futures they were building for themselves. Ed’s deep connection to the farm, his family, and the life he built will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
He is survived by his three sons, Doug Smith (Trudy) of Jamestown; Dennis Smith (Martha) of Mercer; and Dale Smith (Denise) of Valencia; a special friend Shirley Gallatin; and 5 grandchildren: Emily, Grant, Audrey, Austin, and Ashley.
Ed is preceded in death by his beloved wife Patricia; his father and mother Robert and Nelle; sister Dorothy; and grandson Collin.
