Eugene “Duke” L. Lengel, age 92, of Greenville passed away quietly on Monday morning, January 27, 2025, at Avalon Springs Place, Mercer.
He was born in Portage, PA on December 29, 1932 to Stephen A. and Julia (Spinner) Lengel. Gene attended Portage High School and Penn State University Shenango Valley Campus. He was employed in law enforcement as a Mercer Borough Police Officer, as Chief of the Hempfield Twp. Police Department, and as a Portage, PA Police Officer. He also owned and operated Lengel’s Auto Body for over 20 years, managed the Greenville Dinor, and served as a PA State Constable.
Gene was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Portage and had attended St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Greenville. He was a 4th Degree Member and Past Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus and was a member and former Exalted Ruler of B. P. O. E. #145.
Known as Duke by family and close friends, he will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. A free spirit, he was always on the go, enjoyed traveling, delighted in riding his motorcycle until his mid-70’s and ready to help others in need. He cherished time spent with friends and family and was especially proud of his grandchildren.
Gene is survived by three daughters: Debora (Jeffrey) Bishop of Austintown, OH, Susan (Peter) Keenahan of Dublin, Ireland, and Rebecca Lengel of Goshen, IN; step daughters: June Darcangelo and Teresa (Don) Gardner, both of Greenville; a stepson, Timothy A. (Becky) Fry of Jamestown; six grandchildren: Joseph (Sheena) Best, Marie Bishop, Jeffrey Bishop II, Garrett (Arianna) Keenahan, Seana (Corey) Leventhal and Aaron (Samantha) Keenahan; six great grandchildren; siblings: William (Jan) Lengel and Linda McElwain both of OH and Stephen (Kaylene) Lengel of GA; many step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Geraldine Blair Lengel; former first wife Joan Lengel Burford; son Eugene “Tom” S. Lengel; stepsons Thomas Fry, Gerald Fry, and Larry Fry; and sisters, Mary Reichard, Lois Burica, Julia Riblett and Delores Klein.
Services:
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, 2/8/25, in Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main St. Greenville, with Deacon Marty Aubel of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church officiating. Family and friends will be received in the funeral home on 2/8/25 from 1:00 PM until time of service. Inurnment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Portage, PA. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Michael School Endowment Fund, 85 N. High St. Greenville, PA 16125.
