George C. Macko was born in Greenville on June 16, 1940, the son of Daniel and Mildred (Kastan) Macko, and died on June 12, 2023, just shy of his 83rd birthday.  The cause was Parkinson’s.

George grew up in rural West Salem Township, where he and his seven siblings tended animals, spoke Slovak, and learned the value of hard work.  He graduated from the former St. Michael High School in Greenville before embarking on a 51-year career as a steelworker in Warren, Ohio.  He earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and friends and never missed a day of work.  George was a reliable handyman and smart problem-solver who could fix anything.  He was physically strong with intimidating biceps, but not afraid to shed tears at his children’s graduations and other family celebrations.  He was generous and accepting of everyone, a kind soul.

George was a strong Euchre player and an avid golfer and bowler who enjoyed playing in leagues, including in his family’s “Stanley Cup” for golf.  A quick wit, George was often the first to crack jokes and make puns.

George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Becky (Burns) Macko, and by three sons, George B. Macko of Palo Alto, California; David J. Macko of Greenville; and Michael S. Macko (Paul Blain) of Philadelphia; a daughter, Kathy Coykendall of Fargo, ND; a sister, Cecilia Fuchs (Ralph Fuchs) of Greenville; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a large extended family.

In addition to his parents and one grandchild (Rhyan Macko), he was preceded in death by four brothers:  Daniel (Danny) Macko, Joseph Macko, Andrew Macko, and John (Johnny) Macko; and two sisters, Anna Mae Trimmer and Mary Trimmer.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity that serves the poor or marginalized. Arrangements have been entrusted to Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main Street, Greenville.

At the family’s request, in lieu of an online guestbook, any condolences can be emailed to the funeral home at info@loutzenhiserfuneralhomes.com to be shared privately with the family.
