John Edward Calior, age 79, of Sharpsville, passed away Friday afternoon, February 16, 2024. Ed was born on July 30, 1944 in Sharon, PA to John H. and Katherine (Lally) Calior.
He attended St. Joseph’s grade school until his family relocated to Greenville PA where his father ran the RECORD ARGUS and his mother was the home care coordinator at Greenville Hospital. Ed enrolled at St. Michael’s school from which he graduated in 1962. Ed participated in football and basketball, student government (president of student counsel his senior year), vice president of class of 1962, forensic, his area of expertise was extemporaneous speaking, and national honor society.
Ed entered the University of Notre Dame at Notre Dame, IN in 1962 and graduated with a BBA with a major in accounting in 1966. While at Notre Dame he participated in intramural basketball and Air Force ROTC. Ed belonged to two (2) honorary fraternities, one in business and one in accounting. Ed was on the dean’s honor list his sophomore and junior years. Ed worked as a student loan fund manager his senior year. Upon graduation from Notre Dame, he entered Pitt Law School in Pittsburgh, PA from which he graduated in 1969. Ed was drafted into the U.S. Army while in law school. He trained at Fort Dix and Fort Polk before being assigned to Fort Hood, Texas. While at Fort Hood he served as a legal aid clerk in the JAG office. While at Fort Hood he played football and basketball.
Ed was honorably discharged in 1971 and came back to Sharon, where he joined the law firm of Rodgers, Marks, Irwin and Perfilio. Ed worked as a part-time public defender to get trial experience. In 1978 he opened his own law office. Ed practiced law from 1971 until 2015 when a bad fall sent him into early retirement. While practicing he was a member of the American Bar Association, the PA Bar Association, and the Mercer County Bar Association. He served as the solicitor for the borough of Sharpsville and for the Upper Shenango Valley Water Pollution Control Authority. Ed served for many years as the solicitor for the Hermitage Civil Service Commission and the Domestic Relations Office of Mercer County. Ed belonged to the Sharon Lions Club, eventually becoming the King Lion. He was a member and past President of the former Greenville Country Club and had been a former member of Avalon at Buhl. Ed was a founding member of A.O.H. and had been a reader at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church for many years.
On July 7, 1990, he married the former Nancy N. Nelson, she survives. Also surviving are two sisters, Marguerite Scullin and her husband John, of Adamsville, Kathleen Christiansen and her husband Lou of Naples, FL and many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a niece, Erin Scullin; nephews, Kirin Scullin and Brendan Christiansen.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael School Endowment Fund, 85 N. High St., Greenville, PA 16125. Arrangements have been entrusted to Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville.
