Katherine Rose “Kate” (Zgonc) Slack, 40, passed away with her family by her side, in her childhood home in Greenville, P.A. on May 20th, 2021. Kate courageously battled pancreatic cancer for 3 years with a positive attitude and dependence on God. We didn’t get to spend as much time with her as we would have liked. She will be gravely missed.

Kate was born on November 24th, 1980 in Greenville, P.A. to Dr. Timothy and Kathleen A. (Popelka) Zgonc. She was brought home on Thanksgiving Day. Kate was a 1999 graduate of Greenville High School and received her BA in English from Thiel College in 2003. Kate was filled with love and kindness that was felt by everyone who was blessed to know her.

She was a lifelong, active parishioner of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Greenville, and most recently a parishioner of Holy Spirit Parish in New Castle, PA. While at St. Michael, she served as a cantor, catechist, and was a member of the St. Michael Adult Choir. Kate had a great love and devotion to Eucharistic Adoration and maintained a weekly Holy Hour.

Kate married David Slack Jr. on October 6, 2012. They lived in New Castle, PA. She supported him in his dream of starting his own construction business. They took a trip to Ireland together in 2019, fulfilling one of Kate’s dreams.

Kate was employed at CACI and USIS as a reviewer. She was a very talented actress and singer and was a part of the Thiel Players and the Greenville Area Community Theater. She loved reading, baking, traveling, spending time with family, and upholding family traditions. She was devoted to her nieces and nephews. She remembered the interests of her nieces and nephews and made a point to spend time talking with them. Kate invested love and time in her relationships with her siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Kate always tried to connect with everyone she came in contact with, no matter how young or old they were.

Kate was the proud Godmother of Julian Lee Cortez and Judah Matthew Zgonc. She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, mother-in-law, and unborn child Augustus Miriam. Kate is survived by her husband David of New Castle; two sisters Mary (Molly) and Emily Zgonc of Greenville, and brother Major David Zgonc and his wife Christen and their sons Abram and Judah of Fort Bragg, North Carolina ; siblings-in-law Kristi, Emily, Joy, Danielle, and Charles; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved her very much.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael School Endowment Fund, 85 N. High St., Greenville, PA 16125 or Willow Women's Center, 1291 Rutledge Rd., Transfer, PA 16154.
