Louise Black

Louise S. Black, age 92, of Hermitage, PA, left this life surrounded by her children on Monday, October 23, 2023 at St. Paul’s Senior Living Community, Greenville, PA. She was born April 21, 1931 to the late Neal and Roberta (Hague) Brown in Ingomar, PA.

On June 22, 1951, she married James A. Black. Together they raised their family in Grove City, PA. Louise loved life. There is no doubt that she greeted her Lord and Savior with twinkling eyes and a joyful heart.

Louise was passionate about her faith, worshiping and serving Jesus wherever she was rooted. Her home church was East Main Presbyterian Church (Grove City) but she enthusiastically engaged elsewhere after moving from Grove City to be closer to family. Louise and husband Jim enjoyed hosting Bible studies, teaching Sunday School and participating in Christian ministries including Clowns for Jesus, Marriage Encounter and Koinonia-Erie. After Jim’s death, Louise continued serving at churches, work camps including Habitat for Humanity, mission trips (New York City, Mexico and with Youth With A Mission) as well as the Kairos (women’s) Prison Ministry in Albion, NY. Her love of God and people spilled over into everything she did.

Louise worked at various jobs over the years, a favorite being two years at Grove City College where she was Resident Director for a women’s dormitory. Always young at heart, Louise fit right in.

Being a mother and homemaker was her calling. She wasn’t content unless her hands were busy with cooking, cleaning, sewing, and supporting her family. Her children and grandchildren were priorities in life. She is survived by her four children: Jim (Peggy) Black of Erie, Linda Black, Lori Black, and Joel (Nancy) Black of Hermitage; four grandsons Ben (Sarah) Black, Andy (Amy) Black, Brian Black and James Black as well as five great granddaughters, Madeline, Hope, Benedetta, Milana, and Polly.

In addition to the death of her parents, Louise was preceded in death by her husband James (1990), a brother Charles Brown and a sister Martha Beatty. She has two surviving sisters, Rose (Bob) Cokain of Harrisville, PA and Jane (Gary) Vath of Issaquah, WA as well as many nieces and nephews.

St Paul’s became Louise’s home for nearly two years. Although dementia made her thoughts less clear, her heart and spirit were strong. Her family has been blessed by the loving care the Heritage Serenity Circle/Lane and Villa Springs Staff provided “Weezie”. The family deeply appreciates their extensive personal and professional interactions as it provided comfort knowing Louise was in such good hands.

The family wants to also thank Gentiva Hospice for their assistance and support during Louise’s final month on earth.

A time of gathering will be held on November 5, 2023 at 2:00pm followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3:00pm in St. Paul’s Senior Retirement Community, Heritage Building – Anderson Fellowship Hall, 339 East Jamestown Road, Greenville, PA 16125 with Reverend Benjamin Black, officiating.
