Maryett Karen Shannon

Maryett Karen Shannon, age 81, of Avalon Springs Place, Mercer, and formerly of Highland Rd., Hermitage passed away Saturday afternoon, November 16, 2024, in UPMC Horizon Farrell.

She was born in Greenville on September 1, 1943 to Donald T. and Nancy E. (Hodge) Proud. Karen was a 1961 graduate of Greenville High School and a 1964 graduate of Presbyterian School of Nursing. She also earned her B. S. in Health Arts from the University of St. Francis and was employed for forty years as a staff nurse at UPMC Presbyterian.

Karen was a member of the Church of the Brethren, Pittsburgh and had volunteered at the Project RISE Drop-In Center. She was an avid reader and truly loved her cat, “Miss Kitty.”

Karen is survived by her sister, Joan Lee Merz of Hermitage.

She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Ricky Merz.

Karen’s family wishes to thank the staff at Avalon Springs Place for the fine care they provided to Karen.

Services:

Per Karen’s wishes, cremation was chosen and there will be no services. Memorial Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
