Nancy Simpson Marts, age 93, died peacefully at home after a graceful battle with dementia. She was born on December 22, 1929 in McConnellsburg, PA to Russell and Retha (Mellott) Glazier.
Nancy's leadership abilities were evident early as she was voted Senior Class President at McConnellsburg High School. Nancy graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing in 1952 then worked home health care until the family moved briefly to Cleveland before making Greenville their home. While raising her four children Nancy went back to school and obtained her master’s degree in Nursing at Edinboro University and began her teaching career which she loved. She worked at Sharon Regional Hospital School of Nursing from 1977 to 1992. Nancy married Haldane [Had] Marts and they embarked on a life of adventure together. She was an avid bicyclist from days growing up in McConnellsburg but she had taken it to a new level touring the country and world on their bicycles. After retiring from teaching, her motto, "never stop learning" led her to become a passionate weaver. Nancy was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, PA.
Nancy is survived by her son David Simpson of Irvine, Ca., three daughters, Ann Gilbert of Helena MT, Janet Simpson of Redondo Beach, CA. and Carolyn Leslie [Mike] of New Castle, PA. two step-daughters Jill Lodwig and her husband Richard of Albany, CA and Wendy Horning and her husband Tim of Saegertown, PA. four grandchildren Metta Barnhart, Malcolm Gilbert, Austin Theriault, Rachel Theriault, and two great grandchildren Basile and Macki Barnhart and a brother, John Russell Glazier and his wife Susan of McConnellsburg. She was preceded in death by her husband Haldane (Had) Marts of 38 years and the father of her children Dr. David M. Simpson.
Nancy exuded a love for life and a self-effacing character that strove to make other people's live richer. Her energy was evident in her athleticism - from basketball courts to the ski slope and biking trails - and in her constant support of family, friends, students and community. From her inimitable laugh to her perpetual curiosity, the "walking sticks lady" will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
