Sherry E. (Gregory) Bortz, age 81, of Greenville, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, September 10, 2023 in St. Paul’s Senior Living Community. She was born in Mercer on February 27, 1942 a daughter of Howard “Sonny” and Ruth (Robinson) Gregory.
As a child, Sherry developed her lifelong love for animals. She spent a lot of her youth on her grandparent’s farm (Robinson Farm) in Mercer playing with the animals. She often would dress up her cats and pull them in her wagon. Sherry graduated in 1960 from Mercer High School where she played saxophone in the school band. She attended Robert Morris College (now University) in Pittsburgh. Sherry worked for Judge Strannahan in Mercer prior to getting married to her first husband, William W. Inman of Mercer. Sherry was a loving mother and a defender of anyone or any animal in need. A lifelong devout Catholic and member of St. Michael’s Parish in Greenville.
She perhaps is best known for running a successful business with her second husband, Paul E. Bortz. Together they built Bortz’s Orchard into a staple for locals and travelers alike looking for fresh produce and cider. Later they also added a greenhouse and sold pumpkins as well as Christmas Trees. Later in life Sherry would often be found volunteering at the Grange, gathering at the Moose Lodge with friends or attending family get-togethers to spend time with her growing family. Thanksgiving was her favorite holiday because it involved great food and her family together. She was famous for her delicious pies and her cats! Sherry’s last few years were spent as a resident of St. Paul’s Senior Living Community in Greenville where she became a favorite of the staff.
She is survived by three sons, Joseph C. Inman and his wife Laura, Richard C. Inman and his wife Andrea, Mark W. Inman and his wife Sherri; a brother, David Gregory and his wife Linda; ten grandchildren, Gregory Peterson, Christina Inman, Ariana Inman, Sarah Anne Inman, Christopher C.
