Theodore Andrew Marantis, age 95, of Greenville, passed away after a brief illness on May 12, 2023 in St. Paul’s Senior Living Community.
He was born in McKees Rocks, PA on March 28, 1928 to Andrew and Anna (Fedorka) Marantis. Ted was a 1945 graduate of Miles Bryan High School in McKees Rocks and he served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952, stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He earned his B.S. Degree form Edinboro State Teachers College and a Master of Education Degree from Pennsylvania State University. He also completed advanced chemistry courses at The University of Rochester and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY.
Ted started his teaching career in Titusville, PA in 1958 and moved to Greenville in January 1961, where he taught Chemistry at Greenville High School for twenty-nine years, retiring in 1990. During his tenure at GHS he served as Athletic Director, Advisor for the Future Teachers Club, and was active in local, state and national teacher’s union activities through PSEA and NEA. He also served on a committee which wrote a national standardized chemistry exam for high school. Ted was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Greenville and his hobbies included, gardening, travel, model railroading and reading. He was a huge fan of the Steelers, Pirates and Penn State Nittany Lions.
On August 22, 1953 in Meadville First Presbyterian Church, he married the former Patty DeLong, she survives. Also surviving are two sons; Timothy Marantis and spouse Suzanne of Novi, MI and Bruce Marantis and spouse Joni of Pittsburgh, three grandchildren; Kristen Koeppel and spouse Nathan of Plover, WI, Michael Marantis and partner Kelly of Tucson, AZ and Jordan Ferrell and spouse Travis of Cypress, TX and five great-grandchildren.
The family desires memorial contributions be directed to the recently established Kokoski-Marantis Scholarship for GHS graduates pursuing science or science education degrees through the Greenville Area School District Education Foundation’s website (part of the school district’s website) or by mail to: Greenville Area School District Educational Foundation, 9 Donation Rd., Greenville, PA 16125. Arrangements have been entrusted to LOUTZENHISER-JORDAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville.
